Death By Hops 3 - Raiders of the Big Hops

Death by Hops 3 - Raiders of the Big hops (50 cl bottle) 9%
This is the third edition of our Double IPA, that me, my father and Chrille brewed. You can find reviews on the other editions under the category Death By Hops. We plan to bring a keg or two to the Swedish Championship in Homemade Beer in Gothenburg.

We tried DBH2 and DBH3 together as a comparison. DBH2 was served from a glass bottle but DBH3 had been poured into a plastic bottle which isn't ideal. It was also taken from the last couple of litres from the fermentation tun. In the above picture DBH2 is the glas on the left and DBH3 is the one on the right.

Chrille made the sticker for the beer and as you can see we have carried on our movie theme. The version you see above is actually not the one we are going to put on the bottles, but this version is more suitable for the blog. Also have a poster that we will bring to the festival.

Style: Double IPA

Cost: Homebrewed, ingredients cost around 13 sek per litre

Bitterness------Sweetness-----Sourness-----Intensity-------Body
□□□□□□■□----□■□□□□□□-----□■□□□□□□---□□□□□■□□----□□□□□■□□

Appearance: 4/5
It poured a very hazy orange-brown-red- liquid, with a small dirty white foam. It was hazier then DBH2 and the foam was dirtier.

Smell: 8/10
A strong smell of fruity hops attacks the entire room as I poured the beer. Passion fruit, ripe fruit, grapefruit and apricots are noticable.

Taste: 8/10
Strong taste as well and lots of fresh hops. Mostly grassy hops, but also grapefruit, passion fruit and some fruit candy. Very high and lasting bitterness. It had an odd aftertaste that I couldn't put my finger on.

Mouthfeel: 4/5

Medium smooth with a low carbonation and a thick body.

Comment:
As you can see in the above picture DBH3 has a slightly darker colour then DBH2. You can also see that DBH2 has more carbonation and a bigger foam. The colour is most likely a result of what part of the batch it is, since I had a similar problem with some of my bottles of DBH2. The carbonation is a result of the bottling.

It was noticeable that DBH2 had lost allot of hop flavour, it had also made the alcohol allot more noticeable. The hops hid the alcohol fairly well when the beer was fresh. DBH3 had allot more aroma and flavour overall and was allot more aggressive. The taste of hops was so fresh it smelled like my hands after handling the 1,3 kg of hops we used in this brew.

As you can see I'm giving DBH3 lower scores then DBH2. But I think I know the cause of the problem which I explained above. We'll see what the beer tastes like when it comes straight from the tap.

Total: 4/5
